David Fourie has joined as Chief Technology Officer (CTO), bringing with him 25 years of experience in extractive metallurgy and chemical engineering. David began his career at Mintek, leading projects in pyrometallurgy, developing innovative process flow sheets, and conducting thermodynamic modeling for international clients in mining and metal processing. His significant contributions earned him a position in the team that developed a novel Magnesium Process. At Magmec, David will focus on driving innovation in metallurgy process design, strengthening the company’s efforts to deliver sustainable solutions for magnesium metal production.
Magmec was invited to the Global Climate Finance Centre Annual Meeting, held on January 13, 2025, in Abu Dhabi. The event, led by Mercedes Vela Monserrate, CEO of GCFC, convened key industry leaders in sustainable finance, including Majid Al Suwaidi, CEO of Alterra, who manages the newly launched US$30 billion catalytic climate fund. The meeting focused on scaling transition finance and fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors to accelerate climate action. Magmec participated in discussions with attendees exploring investments to support its growth.
Yousef Gorji, Magmec’s CEO attended the Future Minerals Forum (FMF) in Riyadh, one of the largest mining events of the year, where agreements and MoUs worth US$28.5 billion were signed. The forum focused on key areas such as exploration and mining. This event provided an invaluable opportunity for Yousef Gorji to engage with senior mining leaders such as Imad Toumi, Managem Group CEO and other stakeholders that have interest in brine mining.
Magmec has started the DeepConneXtion WaterTech acceleration programme in Paris, an initiative led by UM6P and WILCO. Magmec was selected alongside six other European startups for the five-month program aimed at scaling up and forging industrial partnerships. The programme includes two bootcamps, the first held in Paris and another in Morocco later in the year, along with online sessions and personalized support. The Paris bootcamp featured renowned philosopher Lex Paulson, a professor in collective intelligence, and participation from industry such as Fadil Aimetti, COO at Geolith, a company specializing in sustainable direct lithium extraction from brine.
